Road Construction Updates

Weekly Construction Update June 20th

***Timelines may be altered due to weather***

ODANA/NAKOMA to GLENWAY

  • Water laterals, Storm, Sanitary laterals in the area
  • Sanitary lateral at Nakoma (6/18-6/23)
  • Water tie in at Odana (6/23)
  • Storm & Sanitary work from Glenway Intersection moving east (6/21-6/23)
  • Glenway & Wyota closed Wednesday (6/20-7/4)
  • When the 2 week closure is over Glenway will be paved with concrete!
  • Signage
  • Warning signs will be placed at the Mineral Point intersection to indicate the Glenway intersection is closed
  • 'All Business Open' signs will be placed at the Mineral Point intersection
  • Traffic Control
  • Wyota is also closed for the 2 week time period because they are paving through that intersection.
  • Lewis Ct intersection will be temporarily reopened to allow customers, neighbors and deliveries to reach their destination.
  • The left turn sign will be removed from the Lewis Ct. intersection temporarily

KNICKERBOCKER to EDGEWOOD

  • Knickerbocker to Pickford-  Sanitary work in the area
  • Pickford - South side of intersection is closed for 2 weeks (now-6/30)
  • (Arbor Dr will be the best access to the south side Pickford area)
  • Knickerbocker, Crandall & Sprauge- may temporarily close over the next few weeks to finish work in the area. Will be clearly indicated in the intersection when closed. Timeline is weather depended.
  • Earthwork - cut the street from Sprague to Commonwealth (6/25-6/30)
  • Sidewalk and curb - pouring north side sidewalk in the Knickbocker to Commonwealth as soon as weather allows

EDGEWOOD to GRANT

  • Harrison - South side intersection closed for finishing work (curb, gutter & AT&T work) thru 6/23 (weather dependent)
  • 1900 block - Finishing sidewalk asap
  • cut street to eventually pave - paving will not take place until next month

GRANT to REGENT

  • 1600 block (north side) - Water crossing in the area impacting sidewalk access.
  • Breese to Garfield - (north side) storm work - 6/21-6/27
  • Breese plaza - pouring curb & cutter on the Monroe side of terrace.
  • Finishing work on Mosaic wall

WATER & SANITARY SERVICE

Week of June 4th & June 11th

-Monroe/Odana- Glenway - Various sanitary, storm & water work being done in this area. (See list below)

  • Glenway will be closed until Monday, June 11th.
  • Sanitary work will still be done in the area and moving east. It will be busy near the intersection.
  • Odana - short term water outages for the residential homes in area.

 

-Knickerbocker to Edgewood- Water and Sanitary work in the area and will periodically close many of the intersections over the next 2 weeks.

  • Knickerbocker, Sprague, Crandall, Pickford- Periodically close thru Tuesday, June 12th for sanitary work. Speedway will clearly mark which intersections are closed vs open.
  • Pickford - Closed for 3-4 days (week of June 11th ) for water work
  • Sprague - Closed for 2-3 days when it works with the Knickerbocker closures.
  • Sidewalk will be installed in the Knickerbocker to Commonwealth area week of June 4th

 

-Grant to Regent

  • Once paving work is complete, Grant, Oakland and Garfield will be open!
  • Traffic pattern will switch to south side of street and construction will begin on the north side of Monroe Street.
  • Traffic switch planned for Monday, June 11th
  • Van Buren - closed for 2-3 days for Sanitary work
  • Harrison - will close for 3-4 days when Grant is open
  • 1900 block - water services will be switched over next week. expect short term water shutoff. Speedway will communicate directly with businesses. Sidewalks will be interrupted.
  • 1800 block - Sidewalk open and paved! Terrace work will be completed Saturday, June 9th
  • 1600 block (North side) - Sidewalk closures week of June 11th for water and sanitary work in the Breese to Stockton Ct. area.

  • Sidewalk interruption on the 1800 block (Week of May 21st & 28th)
  • When work is completed, sidewalk will be back filled with gravel and mats so sidewalks will be usable.
  • Gas services will be switched over when it is best for the businesses.
  • MG&E mentioned that if you have questions about the process, feel free to reach out to them. MG&E and KS Energy will be working in front of your businesses to lay the new gas lines.

  • 1700 block is almost complete with sidewalk!
  • 1800 block sidewalk closure for gas line services. Once gas services are complete, new sidewalk will be poured.
  • Knickerbocker to Pickford -North side of road side walk interference for sanitary lines
  • Breese Terrace area

REMINDER OF POWER OUTAGE TOMORROW (5/24)

MG&E has a planned electric outage for both business & residential customers in the following areas:

  • 1700-1900 blocks of Monroe St
  • 1800 - 2100 blocks of Westlawn
  • 1900 -2100 blocks of Keyes
  • 2100 block of Fox Ave
  • 500 - 700 blocks of S. Prospect Ave

The outage is scheduled for 6:00 AM Thursday 5/24 to best accommodate the business schedules in the area.

The electrical outage is estimated to take approximately 1 hour for the majority of the customers. Some customers will be affected for an estimated 4 hour duration.  

MGE has been and will be notifying the individual customers with specific times they will be out of power.

The electrical equipment MG&E will be working is located mainly at three locations:  

An electrical enclosure and pole along Grant St adjacent to Art Gecko.

Work within the existing underground electric vault inside of the Monroe Commons Building along Harrison St & a pole at corner of Harrison & Westlawn.

An electrical pole located at Stockton Ct & Monroe St.  

The neighborhood noise before 7:00 AM will be mainly back up beepers and truck engine related noises.

Weekly Construction Update 4.6.18

Project Update

The Madison Arts Commission will be reviewing proposed poetry selections for Monroe Street at their next meeting. This meeting will be on Tuesday April 10, 2018 at 5:00 PM in room 557 of the City-County Building (210 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd.). Members of the public are welcome to attend that meeting in support or to express an objection to the selections. For those who are unable to attend but would like MAC members to consider comments, please email madisonarts@cityofmadison.com before 10 am on Tuesday, April 10. Your comments (with your name) will be compiled and distributed to MAC as well as entered into the permanent public record. If you have any questions about this project, please email madisonarts@cityofmadison.com.

Monroe St (Odana Rd – Regent St): 

Only one eastbound (inbound toward downtown) lane is open. The lane of traffic that is open will continue to move between the north and south side of Monroe St as needed.

Breese Terrace (Monroe St - Regent St) is closed except for local traffic to businesses. This will last for the duration of the project.

Oakland Avenue is closed at Monroe Street. During this time, the block of Oakland Avenue between Monroe Street and Madison Street will be closed to thru traffic.

Garfield St. is closed at Monroe St.
Knickerbocker St to the south is closed at Monroe St.
Sprague St is closed at Monroe St.

On the west of the project, the contractor is installing water main, sanitary sewer and storm sewer near Glenway and also on Nakoma near Spring Trail.

The contractor is installing water main between Knickerbocker and Commonwealth.

On the eastern end of the project, the contractor is installing sanitary sewer between Regent and  Garfield, water main between Garfield and Grant and the sanitary sewer on Breese Ter.

MG&E will continue to work on their gas main and gas service work from Chapman to Woodrow and in the area around Oakland Ave. and Breese Terrace.

AT&T’s contractor is installing new facilities between Glenway and Nakoma  and also between Westlawn and Woodrow.

 

Construction Details

Eastbound Metro Transit routes will be maintained with bus stops at Glenway Street, Commonwealth Avenue, Arbor Drive, Leonard Street, Grant Street and Regent Street. Detour routes and more information: http://www.cityofmadison.com/metro/monroe/index.cfm

The Southwest Commuter Path will remain open at all times, and sidewalk will remain open at all times along Monroe Street on at least one side of the street.

Crazylegs Lane has been permanently closed as of Wednesday, March 7th, to create a new public space.

At times during the reconstruction project, each cross street will be closed at the intersection with Monroe St.  The duration of the closure will vary depending on the type of work taking place.  In order to maintain access to the neighborhood, no consecutive intersections should be closed at the same time.

The Monroe Street reconstruction project and the outbound lane closures of Monroe Street will last until November 2018.

Project Details

Monday, February 5, 2018 to Mid-March 2018:

  • MG&E Gas will install underground gas lines between Chapman Street and Woodrow Street.

  • Only one lane of eastbound traffic and one lane of westbound traffic will be maintained at all times—the peak hour traffic lanes will be closed.
  • Metro Transit bus service will be maintained in both eastbound and westbound directions. Some bus stops will need to be relocated or closed at various times. A list of these stops can be found at http://www.cityofmadison.com/metro/detours/monroestops.cfm

  • Sidewalk on one side of Monroe Street will be maintained at all times.

Mid-March 2018 to Mid-November 2018:

  • City reconstruction contract will take place.

  • Westbound (outbound) traffic lanes will be closed. One eastbound (inbound) traffic lane will remain open at all times from Odana Road and one eastbound lane will remain open from Nakoma Road.

  • Crazylegs Lane will be permanently closed to create a new public space.

  • South Breese Terrace between Regent Street and Monroe Street will be closed during construction.

  • The Southwest Commuter Path will be redirected during some phases of construction but will remain open at all times.
  • Eastbound Metro Transit routes will be maintained with bus stops at Glenway Street, Commonwealth Avenue, Arbor Drive, Leonard Street, and Grant Street. Planned detours and shuttle information can be found at http://www.cityofmadison.com/metro/monroe/

Monroe Street is scheduled to be resurfaced/reconstructed in 2018. The project limits and construction years are as follows:

  • Resurfacing - Odana Rd. to Leonard St.
  • Reconstruction - Leonard St. to Regent St.

The projects will include design consideration for many items including pavement, curb & gutter, sidewalk, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water main, streetscape items, lighting, signals & green street / water resource considerations etc.
 

Temporary Street Connection on Woodrow Street

The 2017 Woodrow Street reconstruction project will include widened pavement areas which will allow for more access options during the 2018 Monroe Street reconstruction project. The letter sent to Woodrow Street property owners and residents can be found here: Woodrow St Letter PDF
